The Eighth World Water Forum dedicated to Participatory Water Use was held in Federative Republic Brazil from March 18 to 23, 2018

On behalf of the Kyrgyz Republic for participation in Forum the delegation, headed by Tashtanaliev K.ZH., Director General of the Department of Water Resources and Land Improvement of the MAFPLI of the KR, was established. The delegation included the Counselor of the Embassy of the Kyrgyz Republic in the United States and Canada - A.A. Anarbayev.

In general, the Forum was divided into sessions: High-level panel, Political process, Thematic process, Regional, etc. Round tables at a high level were held on the following topics: Climate, Population, Development, Urban, Ecosystems and Financing.

In his report to the High-level Ministerial Conference, K. Zh. Tashtanaliev noted: "After 2040, further glaciation shrinkage in the highland zones, as a result, a significant reduction of the total volume of river runoff that will negatively affect the sustainable development. In this situation, the concern of the Kyrgyz Republic, as well as of the entire Central Asian region, is logical, since food, energy and environmental security and socio-economic living conditions of the population depend on water supply, the number of which has a steady upward trend. The Kyrgyz Republic, as one of the main measures to ensure food security and adaptation to the global climate change aftermath, considers construction of new and rehabilitation of existing hydraulic structures that provide irrigated agriculture. And as it evident is the State Program for Irrigation Development for the period until 2026, which was adopted by the Government of the Kyrgyz Republic in 2017.

Also in his speech K.Zh. Tashtanaliev noted that the republic is committed to fulfilling the tasks of achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and to provide the population with low-cost and clean energy, and as a priority and the most promising direction of providing the population and industry with energy we lay upon the hydropower generation.  Therefore, the republic gives a paramount importance to the organization and development of cooperation in practical terms with neighboring countries in the areas of conservation, reasonable and integrated use of water and energy resources, construction of hydropower facilities and their further operation.

The World Water Forum is the most important international event that solves water problems. The Forum brings together leaders of state and government, ministers of state and representatives of governments, private companies, non-governmental organizations, the academic community, as well as international institutions and civil society. The Forum addresses common challenges that encourage the sharing solutions and best practices, and also broadly promote cooperation among countries and institutions that contribute to the exchange of the benefits of water.

It will be recalled that the first World Water Forum was held in 1997 in Marrakech. The following sessions of the Forum, held every three years, were held in The Hague, Kyoto, Mexico City, Istanbul, Marseilles and Deagu/Zhengzhou. The next in succession the Ninth World Water Forum will be held in Senegal under the auspices of "Water Security" in 2021.
